E-Service Delivery

Land Registry Direct

Land Registry Direct, allows a range of services to be carried out from PCs in customers' own offices within a secure extranet.

Customers can:

  • view online more than 18 million computerised land registers and title plans
  • carry out real-time Official Searches
  • request office copies
  • lodge simple non-dispositionary dealings (facility added February 2002).

Many more customers are using the service. There are now more than 4,000 account holders and 16,000 individual user IDs. In April 2002:

  • 234,114 register views were made (up from 148,186 in April 2001)
  • 103,405 electronic notifications of discharge were lodged (up from 52,449 in April 2001).

Fee income for April 2002 alone was £760,000 (almost a 40% increase over April 2001).

We plan to introduce enhancements during 2002-2003, including facilities to:

  • view any documents referred to on the register
  • acquire real-time Land Charges search results online (much requested).

Longer term, we aim to provide online access to the computerised Index Map that is due to be implemented in 2003/2004.

The pace of growth brought considerable pressure upon the service. Major re-engineering of the whole Land Registry Direct IT infrastructure was undertaken in December 2001 to resolve problems, allow for the expected increase in take-up of the service and permit future service expansion.
