Land Registration Act 2002

The Land Registration Act 2002 was given Royal Assent on 26 February 2002.

The Act will allow for the process of dealing with registered land to begin to move from a paper-based system to an all-electronic system within a few years. It completely replaces the existing 1925 legislation, to allow land registration to be faster, clearer and simpler.

A more accurate register will also be established that will offer buyers more certainty by giving fuller information about the rights and responsibilities of the owner.

The security of property rights in and over registered land will also be improved by providing better means of protecting them. For instance, there will be better protection for the owners of registered land against the claims of squatters.

The Act will come into force in October 2003.
